The Apprentice graduates to Journeyman in this first intermediate level, which begins with a comprehensive review of all 1000+ words from the previous levels in Spelling Log format with Rule Tunes® practice. All new Building Codes® designed for cursive writing are built along with 350+ new junior high equivalent words to build and analyze.After a comprehensive review of Framing Codes® and Grammar Tunes® from Level Two, the Journeyman learns new grammar structures with all new Framing Keys® and sentence application. The Journeyman is introduced to Designing Codes®, the Latin style of English spelling with the designing components and principles that Latin brings to English spelling. The Journeyman builds another 400 words using these designing tools in both notebook and game format. In this level there are two literature readers, Robert Fulton Boy Craftsman and Benjamin West and His Cat Grimalkin, where the Journeyman expands his composition skills as he coordinates grammar and composition to build notebooks for each book.

This level the Apprentice builds another 500+ words in the Blueprints along with new Building Codes® to illustrate various spelling rules and new Rule Tunes®. Using the words he has already built in Level One as tools for building sentences, he is introduced to Framing and Framing Codes®. This focuses on the grammar of English, learning the simple parts of speech and simple parts of a sentence, with new Grammar Tunes®.The Apprentice reads aloud his first piece of literature, Little House in the Big Woods, as he learns how a great author paints pictures with words. He is introduced to various literary elements and composition basics all wrapped up in a 65-page literature notebook of his own writing and illustrations. Toward the end of this year, the Apprentice learns to connect his clean manuscript printing into a simple clear cursive writing.

Learning to build English in the same way a carpenter learns to build a house, the Apprentice begins by learning the tools of his trade – single vowels and consonants, vowel teams and consonant teams. The Master Contractor, Barbara, with help from the Foreman, guides him through Blueprints (spelling list) as he learns to Hear-Say-Write-Read® over 500 words according to Building Codes®, singing our rules with Rule Tunes®.Writing begins with learning the simple figures needed to form letters. He progresses from building words to writing sentences, then simple paragraphs. Spelling from writing is followed by reading complete sentences with fluency and understanding. 20 First Readers® are provided for your student to read aloud and illustrate himself – a great way to track reading comprehension in a young student.
